From Overwhelm to Balance: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Managing Anxiety

Life with anxiety feels like a relentless mental marathon. My brain is a non-stop overthinking factory, obsessing over work performance, social acceptance, and every potential catastrophe. It's exhausting. I’ve been running this race since my anxiety diagnosis in 2017.

But here’s the thing: anxiety has also given me an unexpected superpower. It’s like having a built-in premonition machine. I can anticipate almost anything, which can be helpful for planning. It’s why I’m always early, always prepared.

The downside? Paralysis by analysis. My brain is so busy mapping out every possible outcome that I often struggle to take action. It’s like my mind is living in a future that hasn’t arrived yet.

Enter my partner, Darren. He’s the calm to my storm. While we share similarities, our approaches to life couldn’t be more different. Darren doesn’t sweat the small stuff. He sees an opportunity and jumps. It’s a stark contrast to my meticulous planning.

I’m not suggesting spontaneity is the ultimate life hack, but our differences create a beautiful balance. He grounds me, and hopefully, I bring a little pause for thought to his world. It’s like Yin and Yang.

I know not everyone has a built-in calming influence. But understanding anxiety is the first step to managing it. Recognising that your worries are often more imagined than real is a powerful tool.

Coping with Anxiety

While awareness is crucial, it’s also important to have practical strategies. Here are a few things that have helped me:

  • Mindfulness and meditation: These practices help me stay grounded in the present moment.

  • Physical activity: Exercise is a natural mood booster and can help reduce anxiety symptoms.

  • Talking it out: Sharing my feelings with friends, family, or a therapist can be incredibly helpful.

  • Setting realistic goals: Breaking down overwhelming tasks into smaller steps can make them feel less daunting.

  • Challenging negative thoughts: Identifying and questioning unhelpful thought patterns can shift your perspective.

Remember, you’re not alone. Millions of people experience anxiety. Let’s harness the power of awareness and these coping strategies to turn anxiety from a roadblock into a challenge we can overcome.
